Deputies arrested a 26-year-old man after responding to a report of vandalism at Winton Middle School on March 14, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Deputies were called to the school around 9 p.m. after receiving a report that someone was taking apart an air conditioning unit. During the investigation, deputies found an unoccupied vehicle on the property that they believed was connected to the vandalism.

While at the scene, deputies contacted Erick Vasquez, who was on probation. Authorities said a pat-down search uncovered evidence linked to the damaged air conditioning unit.

Deputies also determined the vehicle found on school grounds was associated with Vasquez. After searching the vehicle, authorities said they found burglary and vandalism tools commonly associated with copper wire theft, along with a firearm.

Vasquez was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, grand theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of unlawful paraphernalia.

Investigators believe Vasquez may be connected to other copper wire thefts in the county.
