Fresno firefighters responded to a report of a possible house fire Tuesday afternoon after a homeowner reported seeing smoke inside a residence in the 5400 block of West Swift Avenue.
Fire crews arrived just after 4:40 p.m. and found smoke throughout the home, prompting a thorough search to locate the source, according to the Fresno Fire Department.
Firefighters determined the smoke was caused by a malfunctioning cell phone that had been left charging. The department said the lithium-ion battery did not enter the thermal runaway phase and did not ignite any surrounding materials.
The Fresno Fire Department used the incident to remind residents to use only manufacturer-approved accessories, avoid leaving devices unattended while charging and discontinue use if a device or charger becomes hot, damaged or shows signs of malfunction.
