The Fresno Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Police said the checkpoint location was selected using data on past impaired driving crashes. The department said the primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads.
Officials reminded the public that impaired driving can involve more than just alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
