The Trump administration is rescinding federal grants for recreational trails and bicycle projects awarded under the $1.1 trillion infrastructure law signed by President Joe Biden, citing a focus on road capacity and opposition to projects “hostile to motor vehicles,” AP reported.
Letters sent to local governments in at least six states — Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Mexico — informed officials that previously announced funding would be withdrawn.
Among the affected projects were a $5.7 million trail in Connecticut, an $11.5 million Albuquerque rail trail, a $20 million Boston streetscape upgrade, and small-scale traffic safety improvements in San Diego and Illinois.
Local leaders criticized the moves, arguing the projects enhanced safety, multimodal travel, and quality of life. The reversals underscore a sharp shift from Biden’s emphasis on biking, walking, and public transit toward Trump’s priority of expanding lanes for cars and trucks.
The Department of Transportation did not respond to requests for comment.
