For the last 17 years, Matthew Stafford has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league, making two Pro Bowls, winning a Super Bowl and throwing for over 60,000 yards between his time with the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams.
However, as Stafford nears the end of his career, Los Angeles needs to prepare for life after the former Georgia Bulldog.
In 2025, the Rams have Jimmy Garoppolo serving as their backup and another former Bulldog, Stetson Bennett IV, holding down the third-string role. It’s unlikely that either are the long-term solution for Los Angeles under center.
With that, Los Angeles will need to look elsewhere, which is why it’s interesting that Pro Football and Sports Network’s Josh Wells recently listed them as potential suitors for Anthony Richardson in a trade.
Richardson, 23, played collegiately at Florida, throwing for 3,105 yards, 24 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while rushing for another 1,116 yards and 12 touchdowns in 24 games with the Gators.
The Indianapolis Colts took Richardson with the fourth-overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft and over his first two seasons, he led the team to an 8-7 record while completing 50.6% of his passes for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and rushing for another 635 yards and 10 touchdowns.
This year, the Colts decided to roll with Daniel Jones as their starter, and he’s shocked the NFL world, leading them to a 3-0 record while looking great.
Richardson still has two years left on his rookie contract, and whoever has him on the roster next offseason could decide to pick up his fifth-year option for 2027, which is currently expected to cost $22.93 million (via Over the Cap).
The former first-round pick hasn’t been great during his time in the NFL, but he’s still young and he was so raw coming out of Florida, that he may just need more time in the right offense. Sean McVay could provide him that opportunity with the Rams, and it probably wouldn’t cost more than a mid-round pick.
