The San Francisco 49ers won’t have defensive end Nick Bosa for the rest of the 2025 season after he tore his ACL in Week 3.

While there’s no hope for Bosa playing again this season, general manager John Lynch on Thursday did have an update on the DE’s progress when he joined KNBR in San Francisco. Bosa is set to have surgery Friday ahead of the 49ers’ Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It’s good news that they didn’t have to wait too long for swelling to subside before doing the procedure. That’s in line with what head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said about the “clean” nature of Bosa’s ACL tear.

“I mean, this one from what they say is as clean as anyone you can do,” Shanahan said. “I mean, just pure ACL and nothing else. The other ones, they’ve all been five years apart. I had a buddy who tore one in high school, tore two in college and then played eight years in the NFL without one. I think [football personnel advisor and former 49ers RB] Frank Gore’s done it a number of times. So, it’s all about how it heals and what type of tear it is. When it’s clean and you go through the rehab and stuff it’s usually brand new after that.”

This is Bosa’s third ACL tear since high school with one in his left knee and two in his right knee. That it was a clean tear with no additional damage provides optimism he’ll be able to get back to something close to full strength in 2026.
