A 24-year-old unlicensed driver was arrested early Tuesday after California Highway Patrol officers saw the driver weaving near Shields and Cedar avenues and determined they were impaired.

The driver’s blood alcohol content measured .269%, more than three times California’s legal limit of .08%, CHP said.

“Even at low levels, alcohol slows reaction time, blurs vision, and reduces coordination,” the agency said. “At higher levels, like in this case, safe driving becomes nearly impossible.”

CHP urged the public to intervene if they see someone attempting to drive impaired, noting that alcohol-involved crashes account for about one-third of all traffic deaths in California.

The agency encouraged those struggling with alcohol to seek help from friends, family, or professionals.
