Two people were killed, including an 8-year-old, when a Ford SUV crashed in a remote area of Shasta County early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported just after 5 a.m. on Wildcat Road east of Rancheria Creek Road.

Investigators said a 1992 Ford Explorer was going east when for unknown reasons the vehicle veered off the roadway, went down an embankment and landed on its right side against a tree.

The force of the collision ejected the three people inside the SUV, the CHP said.

The 40-year-old woman who was driving and the 8-year-old passenger died at the scene, the CHP said.

The 11-year-old boy was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

None of the three people in the SUV were wearing seatbelts, the CHP said.
