Police detained a sixth-grade student Thursday afternoon after responding to a report of a possible gun at Wilson Elementary School near Ashlan and Hughes avenues.

Officers were called to the campus around 1:24 p.m., and the school went on lockdown while authorities worked to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Police said the student saw officers arrive and ran through to the northside of the school grounds.

A crisis negotiator spent about 20 to 25 minutes speaking with the student, who was upset about an incident earlier in the day, police said.

He eventually dropped the weapon, which authorities later determined was a “very realistic” plastic replica and could not fire, a police spokesperson said.

Police detained the student after the gun was dropped.

Authorities focused on keeping him away from other students and staff and are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
