A Fresno County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, authorities said.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Jaime Mendoza, 30, was taken into custody on Monday and booked into jail.

Mendoza, who joined the department in 2016 and was assigned to patrol, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The arrest followed a report made Monday by a deputy regarding a crime that occurred on Aug. 18.

The victim told investigators she was assaulted and identified Mendoza as the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff John Zanoni said in a statement that “it is disappointing to see one of our own accused of the same type of violent crime that he took an oath to combat.” Zanoni said he wanted to assure the public “that we hold our employees accountable just as we do community members who we contact and arrest for misconduct.”

Officials said no additional details are being released because the case involves personnel matters.
