Fresno police arrested an 18-year-old man Wednesday evening after he allegedly fired shots at another vehicle near Blackstone and Nees avenues, authorities said.

Officers from the Northeast Policing District responded around 7:30 p.m. to reports of gunfire and were directed to a parking lot west of the Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

An officer saw a man running near the scene and chased him across Blackstone Avenue.

Additional officers arrived and caught up with the suspect near Sam’s Club.

Police said a patrol vehicle struck the man, who had been holding his waistband where a firearm was located, knocking him to the ground and dislodging the weapon.

The suspect, identified as George Ruiz, was arrested and his firearm recovered, police said. Ruiz was taken to a hospital with minor abrasions.

Detectives determined Ruiz had been involved in a disturbance with another vehicle and fired shots as it drove away, striking the vehicle once.

No one inside was injured, and the occupants later returned to contact officers.

Ruiz was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and related firearms charges.

He will be booked into the Fresno County Jail, police said.
