With the new school year beginning, the Fresno Police Department is reminding families and drivers to stay alert and follow traffic laws to keep students safe.

“The first week or two of school will undoubtedly be chaotic and busy, but with the help of parents, students, and staff, we can make it safer,” Police Chief Mindy Casto said in a Wednesday news conference.

In a message to the community, the department outlined several tips for drivers navigating school zones and drop-off areas.

Officers urged motorists to respect parking laws by avoiding driveways, red zones and loading zones, and to never stop in the roadway to drop off or pick up passengers.

Parents are also encouraged to review their school’s traffic plan, allow extra time for commutes, and teach children about crosswalk safety if they walk, bike or ride a scooter to school.

Police stressed that the speed limit in school zones is 25 mph when children are present, even near busy thoroughfares.

Drivers must also stop for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop signs unless traveling in the opposite direction.

The department reminded the public to watch for crossing guards, obey posted signs, and remain patient with the heavier traffic during drop-off and pick-up times.

Fresno Police Want to Keep Safety Streak

Fresno police reported that no serious, injury-causing collisions occurred near schools during the 2024-25 school year, Casto said.

She stressed the importance of maintaining that record by observing the 25 mph speed limit in school zones and stopping for buses with flashing red lights and extended stop signs.

“If we work together this year, we can keep it that way for the 25-26 school year,” Casto said.
