A Mexican national has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for trafficking over 200,000 fentanyl pills through Fresno County, authorities said Monday.
Miguel Obed Romero Reyes, 26, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was sentenced to three years and five months by U.S. District Judge Kirk Sherriff for possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Sanchez.
Romero Reyes was pulled over on Interstate 5 in Fresno County, where deputies found a duffel bag in his vehicle containing 48 pounds of blue counterfeit M-30 pills packed in 20 separate 1-gallon Ziploc bags.
Prosecutors said he had picked up the pills in Arizona and was transporting them to Washington state.
The case was investigated by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations.
Correction: The U.S. Attorney’s Office updated their original statement to reflect changes in the length of Reyes’s sentence and the name of the judge who presided over the case.
