A Madera man was sentenced to 34 years to life in prison on Wednesday for the 2017 shooting death of Roberto Ramos in Fresno, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Lavale Shawn Vean Jr., 28, received the sentence in Fresno County Superior Court after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and admitting to using a firearm. He had a prior strike from a 2015 robbery conviction.
The district attorney’s office said that there were several procedural delays before Vean pled guilty on April 29.
Prosecutors said Vean and an accomplice opened fire on three people at a Fresno residence on Oct. 2, 2017, firing at least 16 rounds from .40 caliber and 9mm handguns.
Roberto Ramos was killed, and two others, Irma and Jacobo Ramos, survived their injuries.
The shooting followed a previous altercation between Vean and Jacobo Ramos in 2015, according to investigators.
Vean Fled to Texas
Cell phone records later placed Vean in Madera County.
During a traffic stop weeks later, Vean fled on foot after abandoning a vehicle containing a 9mm handgun linked to the shooting.
He was arrested in Texas in February 2018 and extradited to Fresno County.
Due to Vean being 20 at the time of the crime, he may be eligible for a Youthful Offender Parole Hearing after serving 25 years. However, parole is not guaranteed.
Twenty-one victim impact statements were read during the sentencing hearing, the DA’s office said.
