The body of a woman who had been missing since May was recovered last week in Sequoia National Park, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office says.
Authorities announced Tuesday that Jomarie Calasanz, 26, of La Puente, California, was found on Thursday, July 24, by the agency’s Swiftwater Dive Rescue Team in coordination with the National Park Service.
The Tulare County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity on Monday.
Calasanz was swept into the Kaweah River on May 25 while visiting the park with friends and family.
Search efforts were scaled back in June due to unsafe river conditions but resumed throughout July with support from drones, K9 teams, sonar technology, and dive teams.
“I am extremely grateful for the coordination, support, and determination by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and our NPS team, in the continued search for Jomarie,” said Clay Jordan, superintendent of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. “I hope this brings some level of closure to the family.”
Officials remind the public that rivers remain dangerous, even during periods of lower flows.
