Fresno’s airport director, Henry L. Thompson died, the city said in a news release Monday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Henry L. Thompson, director of aviation for the city of Fresno,” City Manager Georgeanne White said. “On behalf of myself and Mayor (Jerry) Dyer, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Henry’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”

The city did not list a cause of death or provide an exact date when Thompson died.

Thompson, 59, oversaw the ongoing $150 million expansion of the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. The work included a new terminal set to open in November, expanded security screening areas and a new parking lot.

“Lost a great guy who became a great friend. Skyline HS ‘83’ grad who was just a few months behind me in age & working hard to make this place and who we touched better,” Gregory Barfield, the city’s transportation director, said in a Facebook post. “We loved our families especially our Moms. Henry Thompson my friend rest easy — you will be missed.”

Thompson Hired in 2021

The city hired Thompson in December 2021. He previously held airport director positions in Santa Barbara and Shreveport, Louisiana. He also worked for 18 years at San Francisco International Airport.

“During his time leading Fresno Yosemite International Airport, Henry was a leader whose expertise and commitment helped guide the airport through significant growth and development. His focus on improving the travel experience for our community and advancing the airport’s long-term goals left a lasting impact,” White said.

Thompson’s Facebook page said he was a native of Canton, Mississippi, and graduated high school in Oakland. He earned a business degree at National University.

His LinkedIn page also said Thompson was enlisted airman in the U.S. Air Force, serving nine years in active and reserve duty.
