WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Homeland Security said on Monday two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured after someone opened fire at the entrance of the Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas.
The suspected shooter was “neutralized” by Border Patrol agents and local police, the department said.
President Donald Trump has made combatting illegal immigration a top priority, surging troops to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and launching aggressive raids in U.S. cities. The actions – supported by Trump’s hardline Republican base – have also led to pushback from Americans concerned about arrests of non-criminals and enforcement tactics that include officers wearing masks to hide their identities.
The number of migrants caught crossing illegally has fallen to record lows under Trump, including a new monthly low of about 6,100 in June.
