A woman was killed and a man seriously injured Thursday night when a motorcycle collided with a tractor in rural Fresno County, authorities said.

The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on Colorado Avenue, just north of Sumner Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle, carrying two adults, was heading south on Colorado Avenue when it attempted to pass a John Deere tractor pulling a tank trailer by using the west shoulder of the road.

The motorcycle drifted farther onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the tractor, which was properly equipped with lights and an implement of husbandry emblem.

Both the driver and passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The female passenger died while the male rider was flown to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

Authorities said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

CHP reminded drivers to slow down and use caution around agricultural vehicles, which are legally allowed on public roads and are often slower and wider than other vehicles.
