A distracted driving enforcement operation in Fresno led to 135 drivers being cited for violating California’s hands-free cell phone law on Friday.
In addition to the citations, officers arrested one driver for DUI and another on an outstanding felony warrant, the Fresno Police Department said.
California’s distracted driving laws, in place since 2008, prohibit drivers from holding a phone or electronic device while driving, including for talking, texting, or using apps, police said. A second violation within 36 months of a previous conviction adds a point to a driver’s record.
Officials reminded drivers to silence phones or store them out of reach while on the road, and to pull over safely if a call or navigation input is necessary.
The enforcement effort was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
