The Denham Forest School is inviting children to unplug, explore, and connect with the natural world at their forest-based day camp in mid-July.
Denham Forest School, open to ages six to 12, is nestled in the heart of a privately held 100-acre woodland in Auberry.
The site features miles of trails, groves of various trees, panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada and a five-acre lake.
The day camp will provide an immersive outdoor experience to attendees with many activities.
Attendees can participate in guided hikes, fishing, plant and tree identification, tracking local wildlife, nature-themed arts and crafts, and scavenger hunts. All activities encourage hands-on learning, teamwork, and outdoor adventure.
“Denham Forest School is more than a camp — it’s a place for kids to experience the joy of discovery in the natural world,” lead educator, Baylee Malcolm, said. “Our goal is to help children build a lifelong relationship with nature, while developing important skills like observation, resilience, and creativity.”
The camp will run July 14 to 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily. Organizers may add additional weeks based on community interest. The camp cost is $320. You can contact the camp at (559) 606-7414 or by email at teacherbayleenatureschool@gmail.com.
Meet the Camp Educators
The lead teacher, Malcolm, believes in cultivating knowledge through experience. She grew up in the mountains with an appreciation for nature.
Malcolm, who has a background in child development, says she is committed to creating a learning environment where children are free to explore and grow.
Xochitl Cornelsen, a camp teacher, has dedicated much of her life to working with children. She began volunteering at a preschool in high school and joined Pine Ridge Elementary School as a teacher’s aide in 2022.
“I’ve always loved being outdoors and working with kids, so this felt like the perfect fit,” Cornelsen said. “I’m proud to be part of something that brings our community together and gives children a chance to learn and grow in nature.”
