The mayor of Selma is facing a criminal charge for allegedly campaigning at a polling place while seeking reelection last November, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
Scott William Robertson, 57, was charged with one misdemeanor count of prohibited electioneering.
Prosecutors allege that on Nov. 5, 2024, Robertson approached voters waiting in line on Election Day while holding a campaign sign and spoke to some about his reelection bid.
Under state law, candidates and their supporters are prohibited from soliciting votes or discussing ballot choices with voters in the immediate vicinity of a polling place on Election Day. The statute also bans visible or audible electioneering near people casting or dropping off ballots, the DA’s office said.
Robertson was cited in Selma on Thursday. His arraignment is scheduled for June 5 at 8:30 a.m. in Department 1 of the Fresno County Superior Court. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail.
“No one is above the law — especially those who hold public office,” District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said in a statement.
