A road rage shooting in Clovis late Thursday night led to a SWAT operation and the arrest of a suspect early Friday, the Clovis Police Department said.

The incident began around 11 p.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire near Fowler and Ashlan avenues.

Investigators determined that an altercation between two vehicles had started earlier near Clovis and Shaw avenues before escalating.

The suspect, identified as Hector Lopez, 35, of Clovis, allegedly fired two shots at the victim’s vehicle, striking the hood and driver’s side window.

Using witness statements and the city’s camera network, police identified Lopez and tracked him to a residence near Sunnyside and Shaw avenues.

Tactical teams executed a search warrant and arrested him without incident. Authorities later discovered two handguns and ammunition buried in the backyard.

Police said Lopez’s child was in the back seat of his truck at the time of the shooting. The child was turned over to family.

Lopez was booked into Fresno County Jail on multiple felony charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, and child endangerment.
