Actress Aubrey Plaza has broken her silence regarding the death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who died by suicide Friday at age 47 near Hollywood Hills.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” stated Plaza and the Baena/Stern family through a release to the PA news agency. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
The Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed Baena was found near the Fern Dell Nature Trail. The director, known for “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth,” had built a successful career after graduating from New York University’s film program.

Before directing his own films, Baena worked alongside acclaimed filmmakers Robert Zemeckis and David O Russell, co-writing “I Heart Huckabees” with the latter. His directorial debut “Life After Beth” in 2014 starred Plaza, marking the beginning of their professional collaborations.
Industry Mourns the Loss
Plaza, recognized for her roles in “The White Lotus” and “Parks and Recreation,” married Baena in 2021. She was scheduled to present at Sunday’s Golden Globes but did not attend. During the ceremony, director Brady Corbet acknowledged the tragedy, saying “My heart is with Aubrey Plaza, and Jeff’s family.”
Baena is survived by his mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, stepsister Bianca Gabay, and stepbrother Jed Fluxman.
