The latest vote update from the Fresno County Elections Office on Friday shows Clovis Unified’s Measure A appears headed to victory, while the lead in a Clovis Unified trustee race continues to widen.

Friday’s update also provided more certainty of passage for Sanger Unified’s Measure M and some welcome news for State Center Community College District’s Measure Q, which now has 55.15% approval over the four-county area. Friday’s update is the first time State Center’s bond measure passed the 55% threshold.

School and community college bond measures must have 55% approval to pass.

Friday’s vote update is still unofficial. Counties have until Dec. 5 to certify the results of the Nov. 5 election.

In the Clovis Unified Area 2 race, Wilma Tom Hashimoto increased her slim lead over Molly DeFrank. Hashimoto, executive director of CASA of Fresno and Madera Counties, took the lead from DeFrank, an author and mother, in Tuesday’s vote update.

According to Friday’s update, Hashimoto had 41.67%, DeFrank had 39.57%, and Janet Kardashian, a retired teacher, had 18.64%.

The three are vying to replace David DeFrank in the Area 2 trustee seat after he decided not to seek re-election.

No lead changes have occurred in any of the other local School Board trustee races. Incumbents are maintaining their leads in two of the three Fresno Unified trustee races, the Clovis Unified Area 4 race, and the State Center Area 2 race. Meanwhile, challengers are upsetting incumbents in two Central Unified trustee races and one Fresno Unified race.

All Local Bond Measures Passing

Clovis Unified’s $400 million Measure A now appears headed to victory. Although it was failing to get the 55% approval in the first three vote releases, Measure A got strong support in later vote updates. District officials expressed confidence at Wednesday’s board meeting that the measure would pass. On Friday Measure A had 57.28% approval, with about 8,000 votes remaining to be counted.

Sanger Unified’s $175 million Measure M also was initially losing but has strengthened its margin of victory. The bond measure has 57.41% approval in Friday’s update.

Meanwhile, it now appears possible that State Center’s $698 million Measure Q will reach 55% approval when all votes are counted. As of Friday’s updates in Fresno, Madera, Tulare and Kings counties, Measure Q was at 55.15%.

The bulk of the district’s votes come from Fresno County, which was approving Measure Q by 55.74%. That and the 56.53% approval in Tulare County was sufficient to offset the 51.56% approval in Madera County and 27.13% approval in Kings County.

If the vote totals hold up, then all the Fresno-area school bond measures will pass. Fresno Unified’s Measure H, Central Unified’s Measure X, and Sierra Unified’s Measure U all have healthy approval margins of 63% or higher.

Fresno County still has more than 13,200 ballots to count as well as 5,400 “signature cure” ballots, for which election officials need to doublecheck voter signatures.
