Mary Marshall, 63, of Menifee, Calif., a retired U.S. Marine Corps member, tragically drowned along with her service dog in the Kings River on Saturday.

In response to the unexpected loss, her daughter Leah Marshall created a GoFundMe campaign to cover expenses not included in military service plans.

The funds will help bring Leah Marshall home from Japan, transport Mary Marshall and her service dog for a military farewell, retrieve her car from Northern California, and cover utilities and repairs, including fixing a gas and water leak.

The family also plans to create a lasting memorial at the campsite to honor Mary Marshall and raise awareness about water safety.

“Our mom dedicated her life to caring for others, and now we want to honor her in the way she deserves,” Leah Marshall wrote. “Mary was a single mom who raised us with love, strength, and determination. Now it’s our turn to give her the respectful farewell she so deeply deserves.”
