As Vice President Kamala Harris raised $12 million at a San Francisco fundraiser on Sunday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside to condemn her support for Israel during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The “Kamala, Cut Ties with Israel Now” protest in Union Square, organized by several Bay Area groups, was one of many pro-Palestinian rallies that have emerged in recent months. Protesters chanted, “Killer Kamala, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide,” before marching to the Fairmont hotel where the fundraiser was held.
Melinda Stahr, an Oakland teacher protesting with Code Pink, expressed her inability to support Harris solely because she’s not Donald Trump. “This is the most important thing right now,” Stahr said, referring to the Israel-Hamas war as her deciding factor for the November election.

Luna Osleger-Montañez, a protester with Answer Coalition, criticized Harris’s past record, stating, “She is second in command in an administration that’s currently committing a genocide.” Osleger-Montañez added that substantial changes to the war would be necessary to persuade her to vote for Harris.
Rami Abdelkarim, representing the Palestinian Youth Movement, emphasized that politicians should earn votes from constituents. He stated, “It is not our responsibility whether we are picking the lesser of two evils,” and called for an immediate arms embargo and cease-fire to win his support.
The protest highlighted the growing tension between the Biden administration’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict and pro-Palestinian activists, who are demanding more decisive action to end the violence in Gaza.
