After more than six months of conflict, many observers believe Israel is losing its war in Gaza.

Concurrently, Israel is also engaged in fighting Hezbollah on its northern border, facing strained relations with Washington, and dealing with an International Court of Justice ruling that a plausible case for genocide in Gaza can be made.

John Mearsheimer, a prominent political scientist, addressed these issues during a discussion hosted by the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS) on May 17. The event, held in Sydney, featured a conversation between Mearsheimer and Tom Switzer, examining the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.

Mearsheimer’s analysis focused on the war in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, and continues unabated. He also discussed the conflict between Iran on one side and Israel and the United States on the other, which occurred from April 1 to April 19, 2024.

In his talk, Mearsheimer assessed the implications of these conflicts for Israel, the US, and Iran. He emphasized the challenges Israel faces on multiple fronts, including deteriorating diplomatic relations and international legal scrutiny.
