Fresno Unified kids are learning what it takes to grow healthy fruits and vegetables and then how to cook them.
The district is partnering with the Fresno Metro Ministry, which is part of the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities, to give students a first-hand look at growing and cooking healthy food, and even selling produce at farmers markets.
Students also are learning about the food ecosystem and health disparities in communities because of the lack of access to food.
White House Selects Fresno Metro Ministry
Fresno Metro Ministry, one of 141 stakeholders chosen by the White House, was selected for its commitment to launching the Healthy Food Solutions Partnership Program.
The program links local government, businesses, community organizations, and school districts to develop leadership and advocacy skills in young people. The organization is working with 1,000 students at 12 campuses, including several Fresno Unified campuses.
“We’re thrilled that our commitment was selected by the White House, but even more excited about what that means for our community in terms of creating generational change that positively impacts health disparities and food insecurity and also the potential funding support to bring our Healthy Food Solutions Partnership Program to fruition,” says Emogene Nelson, executive director of Fresno Metro Ministry.
Nelson, Fresno Unified Deputy Superintendent Misty Her, School Board members, and students will be on hand at Muir Elementary School on Friday to talk about the program.
