GV Wire is hosting a forum between Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig and challenger Jennifer Cruz. The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 1, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Senior Reporter David Taub will moderate the event, which will air on GVWire.com and GV Wire’s online platforms.

Magsig is seeking his third term for District 5, which covers most of Clovis, parts of Fresno, and the mountain and foothill communities. Cruz is a political newcomer, who is the manager of the Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center.

Magisig is a Clovis Republican; Cruz is a Fresno Democrat.

The winner will be elected Supervisor, with a four-year term starting Jan. 6, 2025. No runoff is necessary because only two candidates are running.

In the most recent financial disclosures as of Jan. 20, 2024, Magsig reported $328,616 cash on hand. Cruz reported $4,131.

Cruz Gets Involved After LGBT Library Issue

Cruz came to the political spotlight when the Board of Supervisors discussed the appropriateness of some books in the children’s section of the county library.

The issue originated with the Clovis City Council when Councilmember Diane Pearce publicly questioned whether some books on display for Gay Pride month were too graphic.

The supervisors, led by Steve Brandau, took up the issue, creating a 15-member board to review books. Cruz spoke at both Clovis City Council and supervisor meetings to oppose the plan. She said at the time the policy unfairly targets members of the LGBT community.

Magsig voted to support the policy.

How to Watch

The forum can be accessed through GV Wire.com. It will also be streamed to GV Wire’s Facebook page.

The forum will be archived on GV Wire’s platforms shortly after the event.
