President Joe Biden is set to deliver a speech on the eve of the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 attacks on the U.S Capitol, aiming to highlight the threat posed by Donald Trump to democracy, according to Biden’s re-election campaign.
The speech will be delivered near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, followed by a campaign stop at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where a white supremacist killed nine parishioners in 2015.
Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, stated that the 2024 election will be about “protecting our democracy and every American’s fundamental freedoms.” The president’s speech and campaign stop are seen as a shift in tone, marking his most direct public attacks on Trump and the Republican party in the 2024 race.
Trump, who faces federal charges for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, holds a marginal 2-point lead in a head-to-head matchup with Biden, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.
