The latest Gallup poll reveals that a majority of Americans continue to support stricter gun laws, with 56% of adults advocating for tougher regulations. This figure remains unchanged from last year, despite a slight decrease from the 66% recorded in June 2022 following a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. The poll also indicates that public sentiment towards stricter gun laws tends to surge following high-profile shootings.
However, the survey also found that only 27% of Americans support a ban on handguns for ordinary citizens, a figure that is significantly lower than the 60% recorded in 1959. Furthermore, 64% of respondents believe that owning guns makes their homes safer, a stark contrast to the 51% who held this belief in 2000.
The poll also highlighted a partisan divide on the issue, with Democrats favoring stricter gun laws and Republicans generally opposing them. Despite this, the overall trend indicates a consistent desire for stricter gun laws among the majority of Americans.
Gun ownership rates have remained steady, with 44% of adults reporting that they have a gun in their home or on their property. However, the number of guns per household appears to be increasing, with the average number of guns owned by a household now standing at 4.9.
