A tragic bus accident in Wawayanda, New York, has left two adults dead and five students critically injured. The bus, carrying 40 students from Farmingdale High School, was en route to a band camp event in Pennsylvania when it plunged into a ravine. The National Transportation Safety Board and New York State Police are investigating the incident, with preliminary findings suggesting a faulty front tire may have been a contributing factor.

The deceased adults have been identified as 43-year-old Band Director Gina Pellettiere and 77-year-old Beatrice Ferrari. Both were integral figures in the school’s marching band program. As of Friday morning, five students remained in critical condition in hospital.

The bus was one of six transporting students from Farmingdale High School to the band camp event. The school district expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, with Superintendent Paul Defendini acknowledging the horrific experience the students endured.

The school remained open on Friday, with counseling and support services made available to all students, faculty, and staff. The students on the bus were members of the Farmingdale High School band, who were looking forward to a weekend of music and fun.

The bus accident occurred around 1:12 p.m. on Thursday, with the bus tumbling down a 50-foot ravine. Governor Kathy Hochul praised the quick response and heroic actions of first responders, who she said prevented further loss of life.
