Even though mail theft is a federal crime that comes with prison sentences, local thieves are willing to take the risk.
In fact, the U.S. Postal Service says that mail theft continues to be a problem in Fresno County.
To help combat mail theft, USPS is replacing its blue mail dropoff boxes with smaller hardened versions featuring the tiniest of mail slots. An example: the dropoff box in Fig Garden Village.
USPS has a 24-hour line — (877) 876-2455 — to report stolen mail or mailbox tampering. You can also click on this link to make a report.
“It’s a crime we take very seriously. We have a standing reward of up to $10,000. That’s not something we have to ask for, it’s always there,” says postal inspector Jeff Fitch.
One way to deter thieves, Fitch says, is to sign up for “Informed Delivery.” The service, which is free, sends emails of what you can expect in your mailbox each day.
