The number of cops shot and killed in the line of duty across the United States this year has hit a new high, the National Fraternal Order of Police reported Wednesday.
Fifty-eight police officers have been killed on the job as of Nov. 30 — up from the 47 killed in all of 2020, according to the FOP’s latest figures. The report includes law enforcement and correctional officers at the federal, state, and local levels.
Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officer Toamalama Scanlan is among those on the 2021 list. Scanlan was critically injured during a 2016 shooting in the lobby of the Fresno County jail. He died of his injuries earlier this year in October.
The FOP says 314 officers were shot in the line of duty through the first 11 months of 2021, more than the 312 shot in the line of duty all last year.
A state-by-state breakdown shows that Texas has had the most officers shot in the line of duty so far this year with 42, followed by Illinois with 25 and California with 21.
