If Roe v. Wade Overturned, 1.4M Women Will Travel to California for Abortions

While the U.S. Supreme Court hears the state of Mississippi’s arguments for overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, California officials are bracing for a potential 3,000% increase in the number of women traveling to the state for abortions.

The abortion-rights Guttmacher Institute estimates that the number of women traveling to California each year for an abortion would skyrocket from 46,000 to 1.4 million if the court allows states to completely ban the procedure.

Shannon Olivieri Hovis, director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, told KQED that there will be national implications if the conservative-leaning court sides with Mississippi.

“We estimate that 26 states will outlaw abortion entirely or almost entirely,” she said. “And if 26 states outlaw abortion, millions upon millions of women and pregnant people across this country will not have access to care.”

A decision is expected by late June, a little more than four months before next year’s congressional elections,
