A team of volunteers brought smiles to the faces of five “adopted” Mendota families in the midst of a challenging holiday season.
Fresno-based AMOR joined with partners United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties, Cargill, FedEx,  and Industry Standard Inc., to deliver toys, household products, clothes, and Christmas trees to five families totaling 28 people Friday.

Earlier in the week, AMOR led an effort that delivered 33 containers of food to 17 families in Mendota — three of which had been displaced by an apartment fire.
“We have a lot of families in need in Fresno County,” said Matt Leu, general manager of Cargill-Fresno. “We were able to get a lot of gifts together to make their Christmas holiday a little brighter.”

The nonprofit Alliance for Medical Outreach and Relief is building a $6.7 million health clinic and community resource center in Mendota, one of the most impoverished cities in the nation.
AMOR’s goal is to dramatically improve health outcomes and improve the quality of life for families who are the backbone of the fertile agricultural fields on Fresno County’s west side.
“That’s why we’re coming out here — because of the great need,” said Davena Wichter, executive director of AMOR. “Coming out here and delivering gifts to families is just a wonderful feeling. We’re delighted.”
