Get ready, sweet corn fans. It’s almost here.

Fresno State’s annual sale of its insanely popular sweet corn will begin at 7 a.m. Friday, June 7 at Gibson Farm Market, located at 5368 N. Chestnut Ave

Yellow corn will be sold at 50 cents per ear through the summer while supplies last; white corn will be available the following week.

Free samples of freshly grilled sweet corn will be available 11 a.m.-3 p.m. June 7. Activities for children and families will keep people entertained (when they’re not standing in line). The market will have special hours: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.  June 7-8 and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 9.

Be prepared to deal with a crowd. In previous years more than 200 people have lined up for sweet corns. So be patient; the market holds only 40 shoppers at a time.

According to Fresno State, customers bought 36,980 ears on opening day last year and a record 81,318 ears during the opening three-day weekend in early June. More than 550,000 ears were sold altogether in 2018.

The product was first grown on campus fields in 1981 and initially sold to the public in 1982.

The sweet corn is raised on the 1,000-acre University Agricultural Laboratory, which also provides student-made dairy, food processing, fruit, horticulture, livestock, meat, nuts and wine products to Gibson Farm Market. Sweet corn was first grown on campus fields in 1981 and began being sold to the public in 1982.

After the sweet corn binge, Gibson Farm Market will return to normal summer hours June 10: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
