Curse the triple-digit heat if you must. But don’t forget that high temperatures mean Fresno’s cooling centers are open this weekend.
The city opens public pools and other sites when Fresno’s forecasted high hits 105. This weekend’s bake is expected to push up to 109.
Here are the cooling center locations. All will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

  • Ted C. Wills Community Center, 770 N. San Pablo Ave.
  • Frank H. Ball Neighborhood Center, 760 Mayor Ave.
  • Mosqueda Community Center, 4670 E. Butler Ave.
  • Pinedale Community Center, 7170 N. San Pablo Ave.

Fresno’s FAX buses will provide free transportation along normal routes to and from cooling center sites.  Residents must tell the bus driver they are traveling to a center. Here’s the FAX schedule and routes.

Pools open for recreational swimming

Residents also can take advantage of the Blue Space program, a partnership between the Fresno and Fresno Unified School District that provides recreational swimming and swim lessons at Fresno high school pools. Fresno Unified pools will be open for recreational swimming from noon to 5 p.m. at Edison, Roosevelt, Hoover, Fresno and Sunnyside high schools.  Bullard High is open for swim lessons only.  The pool at McLane High School is being renovated and is unavailable.
In addition, pools run by the city at Mosqueda Community Center, Frank H. Ball Neighborhood Center and Mary Ella Brown Community Center (1350 E. Annadale Ave.) will offer recreational swimming from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The pools are free to use when the cooling centers are open.
In addition, children this summer have access to swimming, activities, reading and snacks thanks to a partnership between the city of Fresno and Kaiser Permanente Fresno.
The medical center has provided grants that will fund activities for children at recreational centers and libraries:

  • Central Unified libraries will be open during the summer, thanks to a grant from Kaiser Permanente to the Foundation for Central Schools. The libraries are at McKinley and River Bluff elementary schools and on the Central High East campus.
  • A grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Fresno County will pay for healthy snacks and activities at the Fink-White and West Fresno clubs.
