A veteran district school employee told GV Wire on Friday that Central Unified School District classes are over until Monday, April 20.
Two weeks of the closure coincide with the district’s spring break, which is April 6-19.

Superintendent Andy Alvarado then confirmed the closure in an official announcement that was communicated to families in the nearly 16,000-student west Fresno district.
“Effective Monday, March 16, we will close all Central Unified Schools and programs and plan to reopen on Monday, April 20,” Alvarado said.  “The superintendent and the cabinet, in collaboration with our union group leadership, will be collaborating through next week to finalize plans for our extended closure. We will deep clean classrooms and facilities prior to the reopening of school.”
Alvarado said that teachers have been asked not to assign new school work at this time.
“The district will continue to explore its potential plans for remote learning or enrichment,” Alvarado said.

Free Breakfast, Lunch Programs Will Continue

The superintendent also said that it was ending outside use of district schools immediately.
But, said Alvarado, children between 1 and 18 years old will still be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch at these schools: Biola-Pershing, Polk, Saroyan, Teague, and Tilley elementary schools, and Central High East on Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Clovis Unified Cancels Classes

Clovis Unified School District said after 6 p.m. Friday that it is shutting down all schools from Monday to April 13 to prevent the spread of the virus.

The covering Clovis and parts of Fresno is the state’s 14th largest with 43,264 students.
Madera Unified School District said it would hold an emergency board of trustees meeting today at 5:30 p.m. to make a decision on whether or not to close schools.
