With winter weather approaching, the non-profit Foundation for Central Schools gifted new coats and jackets to over 800 students across the district Wednesday.

Students from 22 district schools benefited from the program this year. It’s one of several annual events for Central students and families organized by the foundation.

The effort was made possible through a $15,000 grant from Granville Homes, which has supported the Coats for Kids program for over a decade. The funds also help to underwrite the foundation’s annual Holiday Joy canned food drive that benefits more than 300 Central Unified families.

Basic Necessities Support Learning

“More than 70% of our Central Unified students face food insecurity and often cannot afford clothing items, including a winter jacket,” said Superintendent Andy Alvarado. “Lacking these basic necessities can often hinder student learning.”

“Thanks to the support of Darius Assemi, many of our students will face one less obstacle to their learning,” Alvarado said. “I’m also grateful to the Foundation for Central Schools for all of their hard work in securing and distributing the coats to all of our school sites.”
