A chase through Tulare County foothills ended in a shootout between a suspect, a California Highway Patrol officer, and sheriff’s deputies.

Both the CHP officer and suspect were shot, according to Ashley Ritchie, spokesperson for the sheriff’s department.

During a vehicle chase, the suspect pointed a gun toward officers and opened fire. The suspect then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an orchard just north of Highway 198.

The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran, during which more gunfire was exchanged, Ritchie said.

One CHP officer was shot in the shoulder. She was airlifted from the scene.
