U-Haul migration trends data is compiled from more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions that occur annually.

In 2020, California supplanted Illinois as the state with the greatest net loss of U-Haul trucks, “by a wide margin” according to the company.

The Golden State has ranked 48th or lower on the list since 2016.

Tennessee posted the largest net gain of U-Haul trucks crossing its borders in 2020, U-Haul said, making it to the No. 1 spot on the list for the first time.

“I’m seeing a lot of people from California move (to Tennessee) because they’re attracted to our lifestyle,” noted Jeff Porter, a Nashville area U-Haul spokesman. “Tennessee has no income tax and is very business-friendly.”

In a news release, U-Haul said, “Tennessee’s influx of do-it-yourself movers during a turbulent year marked by the coronavirus pandemic means that a state other than Florida and Texas tops the growth rankings for the first time since 2015, when North Carolina led the way.”

Fresno Specific Numbers

Fresno saw a 5% decrease in the arrival of one-way U-Haul truck customers year-over-year, and also a 5% drop in the departure of one-way U-Haul truck customers in 2020 (compared to 2019), according to company data.

Looking at a breakdown of U-Haul moving transactions in and out Fresno in 2020, arrivals accounted for 48.4% of traffic and departures accounted for 51.6% of traffic.

East and Central Tennessee

East and central Tennessee are enjoying the biggest gains in U-Haul arrivals, according to company data. The top growth cities include Knoxville, the Tri-Cities, Cookeville, Clarksville, Cleveland, Murfreesboro and Maryville.
