Don’t turn the warm feelings of this holiday season turn into an arrest — or something worse.

That’s the advice from Fresno police, who began a maximum DUI enforcement campaign today that continues through New Year’s Day.

National statistics paint a grim picture of the dangers of drinking and driving. In December 2021, 1,013 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fresno’s high-visibility effort will put additional officers on the road looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

This past Saturday, officers arrested 14 suspected DUI drivers. On average, first-time offenders face $13,500 in fines and penalties, and a suspended license if convicted. The fines and consequences for repeat DUI offenders are much higher.

Fresno PD encourages those who plan to drink alcohol to have a “go safely” game plan by scheduling a ride or designating a sober driver.

Another reminder: Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Marijuana, prescription medications, or over-the-counter drugs may also impair. It’s best to do some research and understand how certain drugs may affect your driving ability.
