Shellyne Rodriguez, a former professor at Cooper Union, has been dismissed following her anti-Israel comments on social media. Rodriguez, who was previously caught on camera threatening a New York Post reporter with a machete, claimed her termination was due to her public remarks about “Zionists.”

The exact posts that led to her dismissal remain unclear, but Rodriguez has been known to encourage protests against landlords and business people with ties to Israel. She also shared an edited flyer of a pro-Israel event covered in cockroaches on Instagram.

Cooper Union is a private nonprofit college in New York City’s East Village. It grants degrees in art, architecture, and engineering and offers courses in continuing education.

The Cooper Union Students for Justice in Palestine condemned her firing, calling it an “intense escalation of repression”. However, others, including Jeffrey Lax, a CUNY law professor, applauded the decision, stating that Jewish students at Cooper Union were relieved by her dismissal.
