Two storm systems are taking aim at Central California and the Sierra this weekend, bringing more rain to the Valley and snow to the mountains.

The first storm is due to arrive Friday afternoon and is forecast to bring a tenth of an inch to a quarter-inch of rain to the Fresno region and a few inches of snow at 7,000 feet and above in the Sierra by the time it departs Sunday morning, J.P. Kalb, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Hanford, said Thursday.

The second storm will arrive Sunday morning right on the heels of the first, but this one is expected to have more significant amounts of precipitation, Kalb said.

Fresno and the Valley could get up to a half-inch of rain through Tuesday morning, and the Sierra could get up to two feet of snow at elevations above 7,000 feet, he said.

Above-Average Temperatures, Fog Next Week

Temperatures will remain above average, which is keeping the snowfall at higher elevations, Kalb said.

The forecast for later next week is for below-average precipitation, he said.

With the weekend’s rain, the likelihood is strong for a resumption of the dense fog that descended on the Valley this week, leading to daily advisories about travel hazards.
