A new poll suggests that Sen. Dianne Feinstein is serving her final term in Washington, D.C.

According to a Berkeley IGS poll released Wednesday, just 30% of California’s registered voters approve of her performance.

Feinstein, who has been in the Senate since 1992, is 88 years old. When she ran for re-election in 2018, many young progressive Democrats said that it was time for her to step aside.

However, she easily defeated state Sen. Kevin de León, a fellow Democrat, in both the primary and general elections.

The poll offered this analysis of Feinstein’s situation in a news release:

“A major contributor to Feinstein’s negative standing is that she is falling out of favor among many of the state’s traditionally Democratic voting constituencies.  The five-term senator now receives more negative than positive job ratings from strong liberals, women, voters of color, younger voters, as well as voters in Los Angeles County or the San Francisco Bay Area.”

Low Marks for Biden, Harris, Too

While California is an overwhelmingly blue state, the poll also indicated slipping support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Biden, whose approval rating last summer was 59% in the poll, dropped to 47% support.

Meanwhile, 38% of voters say Harris is doing a good job as opposed to 46% who view her job performance negatively. In July 2021, 49% of voters had a favorable impression of Harris compared to 38% who didn’t like her performance.

“I was amazed at the disaffection for both of the women,” Mark DiCamillo, the poll’s director, said of Feinstein and Harris to The Los Angeles Times.

The poll also indicated that voters are taking a wait-and-see attitude with Sen. Alex Padilla or know little about him. While receiving a 34%-26% approval rating, 40% of poll respondents said they had no opinion on his performance.

Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed the 48-year-old Democrat who was California’s secretary of state to replace Harris in January 2021.
