Well, that didn’t take long.

Just days after Politico reported that the highly-paid leader of California’s education equity program lived in Philadelphia, Daniel Lee resigned amid criticism over both the long-distance arrangement and how he was hired.

Politico delivered the news of Lee’s resignation in a story published Tuesday night.

Lee Made Nearly $180K a Year

In addition to living 2,500 miles from work, the 51-year-old Lee also operated a business in Philadelphia.

Lee’s state salary was $179,832, and his 18-page resume showed no experience in California or relationships with school districts in the state. He and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond are close friends.

California’s human resources department told Politico that state workers can live elsewhere under rare circumstances. One example: when out-of-state residency is required for duties such as lobbying Congress.

“Following updated guidance from CalHR, Dr. Lee offered, and we have accepted, his resignation,” a state Department of Education spokesperson said Tuesday night.
