Ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with fellow Republican in the Capitol building Tuesday. The incident, which was reported by NPR’s Claudia Grisales on X (formerly Twitter), involved McCarthy and Rep. Tim Burchett, leading to a chase and verbal exchange in the hallway.
Burchett, who was one of eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy as speaker in October, accused McCarthy of elbowing him. The Tennessee representative followed McCarthy down the hallway, questioning why he had been hit.
McCarthy denied the accusation, leading to a heated exchange between the two.
Burchett’s press secretary confirmed the incident to Newsweek, describing McCarthy as a “bully” with a large security detail. McCarthy has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The incident has sparked reactions on social media, with many criticizing the behavior of the two politicians.
