Colombian President Gustavo Petro is under criminal investigation by at least two U.S. federal prosecutors’ offices, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The inquiries revolve around Petro’s possible meetings with drug traffickers and whether his presidential campaign solicited donations from traffickers, the sources told the New York Times.
The investigations are being carried out by the U.S. attorney’s offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, according to the Times, which added that they remained in early stages.
Colombia’s presidency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
