The Modesto Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road, the department said in a statement.
Officials reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications may affect driving, and while marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use, driving under its influence is illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
